Today's Topic: Getting Involved in Service in your Community
Whether you realize it or not, there are various needs within your community that need to be met, from the people in your community, to the animals, to the environment around you. Why do we get involved in service in our communities and beyond? It allows us to give back, which makes us better members of the community, and better, more selfless people in general.
The first step to getting involved is to find philanthropies that you are passionate about. I volunteer through National Charity League, an organization that provides middle and high school girls with philanthropic opportunities around them. There are other organizations that do the same thing as well, such as Lion's Heart. If you can find an organization like that, you can use their resources to get involved, which is a great way to go about it.
If you want to do it on your own rather than in an organization, you can research local philanthropies online, and they will usually have a place on their website that explains the process for volunteering. Remember, there are a few things you should make sure you do when you actually go to volunteer. Always show up with a positive attitude, and treat everyone involved there, whether they are a volunteer or someone receiving service, with respect. The organization will want volunteers who are excited to help, so make sure you are being productive and on taks, not getting distracted and forgetting that you are there to do work for them.
Something that I've found really fun is getting my friends to come and volunteer with me. When I saw a philanthropic opportunity, I would always take the initiative to reach out to some friends, the more the merrier, and ask them if they were available to come and do it with me. This way, it becomes a win-win, because I was able to spend time with people close to me, and the organization will have more volunteers, and their impact will be greater.
All in all, giving back is so important as we get older, and are more aware of issues in our community, so everything I just said is a great way to go about doing it! I can't wait to see what you all accomplish!
