Today's Topic: Creating a Balanced Lifestyle
Every day we are constantly juggling schoolwork, athletics, friends, meetings, and so much more. Trust me, I have plenty of experience being busy, as my weeks consist of school, homework, practice, ASB meetings, NCL meetings, extra IB classes, games/competitions, and of course, time with my family and friends. What can we do to balance all of that? In this post, I'll share what works for me!
My mentality has really always been to work hard and play hard. I struggle when I feel like my life has been taken over by work, but also feel unproductive when it is all play. To keep yourself on track when working on schoolwork, one super productive method is the Pomodoro Technique, in which you work or study for 25 minutes, and take 5 minute breaks in between, which allows for maximum productivity. With this method, you can complete your work, without overwhelming yourself with huge chunks of time without any breaks.
On the other hand, in order to make the most of your free time, something that really works for me is spending it doing what I love. For example, I love to go to the beach, go shopping, go on a new hike, try a new restaurant, read a new book, have a movie night with friends, or exercise. These are things that I love doing, so when I spend my free time doing any of these activities, I'm happier and more motivated to return to my work, because I feel like I used my time in a fun, exciting way.
In addition to this, it helps to try and combine work and play when completing a task. For example, when I would dedicate time to philanthropy and service, I would encourage my friends to come and volunteer with me, so that I was spending time with my friends while serving my community.
All in all, acheiving balance is difficult for everyone, and there will be times where you feel like your life is being consumed by either too much work, or not enough of it. However, do not stress, just remember that this will pass, and you will easily be able to resume a balanced lifestyle shortly.
